Mevion to Highlight Expanded Image-Guided Proton Therapy and Patient Positioning Offerings at ASTRO 2019

Dr. Carlos Perez joins Mevion’s Advisory Committee

LITTLETON, MASS. September 11, 2019. Mevion will showcase a full suite of new image guidance and patient positioning systems for Mevion’s S250 Series™ of Proton Therapy Systems at the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) Annual Meeting, September 15th to 17th in Chicago, IL.

While other proton providers believe in a “one-size-fits-all” IGPT solution, Mevion has capitalized on partnerships with best-in-class image-guidance and patient positioning manufacturers to provide a suite that is fully customizable to fit the individual needs of each clinical practice.

A range of 3D imaging options now is available on the Mevion systems. An integrated 360° Cone-Beam CT developed by medPhoton in conjunction with Catalyst PT™ surface tracking from C-RAD is currently in use at Maastro Proton Therapy in the Netherlands. The SOMATOM Definition Edge CT®* on rails from Siemens will be integrated into the Mevion HYPERSCAN® installations at Huntsman Cancer Institute and Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

Since Mevion’s compact proton therapy systems are embedded into existing radiation therapy departments, the ability to offer the centers preferred immobilization systems can be a great benefit. Mevion’s patient immobilization options now include Qfix’s kVue™ One Proton Couch Top that features a rail-less construction and a thinner total thickness, which enables a smaller air gap from posterior beams. Two additional couch tops from CIVCO Radiotherapy* and Orfit* will be added to the S250 Series patient immobilization offerings later this year.

“We believe that clinicians should have access to the most advanced imaging and positioning products that they feel will best serve their patients,” said Tina Yu, chief executive officer at Mevion. “Our focus on providing accessible proton therapy worldwide includes a commitment to include the most agile and innovative solutions to keep customers on the forefront of advances in delivery and treatment techniques.”

Addition to Mevion’s Senior Advisory Committee

Mevion welcomes Dr. Carlos Perez to the Mevion Senior Advisory Committee. Dr. Perez, an accomplished Radiation Oncologist, is a Professor Emeritus of radiation oncology at Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis, MO. Dr. Perez was a pioneer in treatments of lung, cervix, and prostate cancer. His research on breast cancer helped establish optimal protocols for combining radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and surgery in patients with advanced tumors. He has received the Gold Medal from ASTRO, the American Radium Society, the American College of Radiology, The Spanish Society of Radiation Oncology, the Latin American Society of Radiation Oncology and the Circle of Latin American Radiation Oncology (CRILA) for his many contributions to the field. Dr. Perez is also known for co-editing, "Principles and Practice of Radiation Oncology," which is in its 7th edition and "Radiation Oncology Therapeutic Decisions," in its 4th edition.

In his capacity as a member of the Mevion Advisory Committee, Dr. Perez will bring his extensive experience as a pioneer in radiation oncology to provide guidance and vision to Mevion’s clinical and technical development strategy. Dr. Perez is committed to contributing to the enhanced use of proton therapy for patients afflicted by cancer.

Dr. Perez joins Former Chairman of the United States Federal Reserve, Mr. Paul Volcker and Former Vice-Chairman of Johnson & Johnson, Mr. Robert Wilson as part of the Mevion Advisory Committee.

“We are honored to welcome Dr. Perez to the Mevion family,” said Tina Yu. “Dr. Perez’s leadership and vision have changed the course of radiation oncology, and we look forward to his guidance to help Mevion redefine cancer care into the future.”

Events

Mevion will host an invitation-only users event on Monday, September 16th. The users group, Nucleus, is the official community for Mevion users to access educational content, training, and will serve as a platform to exchange ideas, best practices, and innovation. The meeting at ASTRO will focus on the latest product updates, future advances, and presentations by Mevion users featuring 3D imaging techniques, FLASH potential, and hypofractionation application in proton therapy.

Demonstrations

Mevion and RaySearch will jointly provide treatment planning demonstrations at the Mevion booth that will feature the latest capabilities and clinical performance of the HYPERSCAN Pencil Beam Scanning System in conjunction with the treatment planning system RayStation®.

In addition, Mevion will be providing live architectural demonstrations for attendees to visualize how a proton system could be integrated into their center.

ASTRO attendees are invited to visit Mevion at booth #1431 to talk to our onsite team about Mevion proton therapy and IGPT solutions and learn more about how Mevion has changed proton therapy.

For updates from ASTRO:

*Siemens Definition Edge® CT and CIVICO Universal Couchtop are pending validation on Mevion systems. Orfit Couch Top integration is pending 510(k) clearance.
